Aerial views of the Valley and Ridge Province of the southern Appalachians, northern Alabama.

The Valley and Ridge Province consists of multiple parallel valley and ridges, held up by folded rocks, as shown in the top photo. The bottom photo shows a plunging fold. The deformation of these rocks occurred during multiple compressional mountain-building events in the Paleozoic Era.
